Golden Retriever Puppy Feeding Schedule by Age: Meal Frequency, Portions and Food Transitions

Your new golden is home, the crate is set up, and now there’s a bag of kibble on the counter and a puppy staring at you like she hasn’t eaten in a week. She has. She just doesn’t care.

Here’s the schedule in one breath. From 8 to 12 weeks, feed three or four small meals a day. Somewhere between 3 and 6 months, drop to three.

Between 6 and 12 months, go to two meals, which is where most goldens stay for life. The switch from puppy food to adult food usually comes between 12 and 18 months, and big males often stay on puppy food a bit longer.

How many meals a day does a golden puppy need?

Fewer as she grows. A young puppy has a tiny stomach, so her food gets spread across the day.

The American Kennel Club puts it this way. Four feedings a day usually cover puppies from 6 to 12 weeks. Cut to three meals sometime between 3 and 6 months. From 6 to 12 months, feed twice a day. Our own 8-week-old pups eat three meals a day, about a third of a cup each, so three or four both work at that age.

How do you know it’s time to drop one? The AKC says a puppy should lose her potbelly and pudgy look by about 12 weeks. If she’s still round at that point, stay with puppy-size portions a little longer.

What does a feeding day look like?

Boring and predictable. That’s the goal.

Puppies run on routine. Feed her at the same times every day and her bathroom breaks start landing at the same times too, so you’re not guessing when she needs out. Say you’re on three meals. Breakfast at 7, maybe before your second coffee. Lunch around noon. Dinner at 5, then just water. Why so early? A puppy who eats at 8 p.m. is going to want out at 11, and maybe again at 2.

Once she’s done eating, grab the leash. Plenty of puppies need to go not long after a meal. Potty Training Golden Retrievers: Timeline & Tips That Work covers the outdoor side. Naps fall between meals, and Golden Retriever Puppy Sleep Schedule: How Much Sleep Do Puppies Need by Age? shows how much rest she needs at each age.

One more habit. Put the bowl down, give her about 15 minutes, then pick it up. The AKC recommends this to head off picky eating.

How much should a golden puppy eat?

Less than she’d like. Puppies that eat all they want grow too fast, and with a large breed you want steady growth, not a race.

Use the chart as a starting point. Then use your hands. Run them along her side about once a month. You should feel her ribs but not see them, even when she’s wet. Can you see ribs? Add a little food. Can’t feel them? Cut back. If you’re unsure, it’s better to underfeed a puppy slightly than to overfeed her.

Treats count, too. Every training cookie is part of the day’s food, so keep them tiny and take a little out of her meals on heavy training days. For weight ranges month by month, read Golden Retriever Puppy Diet: How Much to Feed Your Golden Retriever?

What kind of food should a golden puppy eat?

A puppy food made for large breeds. Our males grow to 70 to 85 pounds and our females to 55 to 65, so goldens sit right in that group.

Turn the bag over and find the AAFCO statement. A food that’s safe for big puppies will say it’s for growth “including growth of large-sized dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult).” That wording matters because, as the Whole Dog Journal explains, too much calcium can cause bone and joint problems in large-breed puppies. Large-breed formulas keep calcium in a tighter range.

How do you switch a golden puppy to a new food?

Slowly. And not during the first week home.

Think about her first few days with you. New house, new smells, new water, a car ride, people she’s never met. Her stomach feels all of it. So keep her on whatever she was eating before she came home, at least until she’s settled. Then, when you’re ready to switch, spread it over about a week:

DaysOld foodNew food
1 to 275%25%
3 to 450%50%
5 to 625%75%
70%100%

Stir the two foods together so she can’t pick out the old kibble and leave the new. Slightly softer stools in the middle of the week are normal. Loose stools aren’t. If that happens, slow down and stay three or four days at each step instead of two. Vomiting more than once? Stop the switch, put her back on the old food and call your vet if it doesn’t settle. How to Transition a Puppy to a Different Type of Puppy/Dog Food goes through the whole method, plus when it makes sense to take two weeks instead of one.

When should a golden switch to adult food?

Usually between 12 and 18 months. We generally suggest starting around 12 months, and bigger males can stay on puppy food longer. The AKC gives larger breeds 12, 13, even 14 months, and says it’s better to stay on puppy food a little too long than to switch too early.

Use the same seven-day mix. Calorie needs start to fall around this age, so recheck her ribs after the switch.

Frequently asked questions

How many times a day should I feed my 8-week-old golden retriever?

Three times a day works fine at that age, and some owners do four. Ours eats about a third of a cup per meal at 8 weeks.

When can a golden retriever puppy eat twice a day?

Somewhere between 6 and 12 months. After that, two meals a day is usually it for the rest of her life.

Should I leave food out for my puppy all day?

Better not to. Put the bowl down at mealtime and pick it up after 15 minutes or so. And yes, treats count toward the day’s food.

What age should a golden retriever switch to adult food?

Most make the switch between 12 and 18 months. We usually suggest around 12. A big male can stay on puppy food a bit longer.
