To ensure your puppy is developing at the right rate and is within the appropriate weight range for his age, scroll down to see growth charts.

Golden Retriever Puppy Growth

Puppies Grow Too Fast Before They Grow Fat

The majority of American dogs are overweight, and many large breed puppies are developing too quickly, which puts them at risk for bone and joint issues, some of which may not manifest until much later in life.

An overfed dog will grow too quickly before becoming overly fat, unlike human children.  This has frequently happened to me when two puppies from the same litter were reared in separate households. An excellent illustration is the comparison of the growth of a smaller puppy that was overfed at 10 weeks to that of a puppy that was fed properly.

Manage Your Puppy’s Development

Even if your puppy isn’t overweight, you can be overfeeding him or her if they don’t have particularly huge parents and are developing into what you believe would be a large dog.  Your puppy’s growth must be managed.

You Can Feel Their Ribs But Not See Them

Additionally, don’t underfeed your dog.  Your dog’s ribs should be somewhat palpable.  Even when your dog is wet, they shouldn’t be so skinny that their ribs are visible.

General Guidelines for Puppies

Here are some general recommendations for puppy feeding amounts. The majority of dog food packs advise against overfeeding. Puppies that are eight weeks old should consume around 1/3 cup three times a day.

Our 11–12-week-old pups eat around half a cup of food three times a day before I send them home. They will require a total of two cups per day by the time they are three months old, and by the time they are four months old, they should be consuming around two and a half cups per day.

By five months for males and six months for girls, increase to around three cups each day. At six or seven months, you will most likely need to increase to roughly 3 1/2 cups (or potentially 4 cups) for boys.

What Golden Retriever Puppies Should Look Like

Your puppy is not too skinny as long as you can’t see their ribs. At this age, Golden Retrievers are expected to seem lanky, and when given the right quantity of food, they all behave as though they are famished. They will all grow too quickly if they are allowed to consume as much as they like. Dogs do not have unrestricted access to food in the wild. For their nourishment, they labor.

After A Year Or So, Caloric Requirements Significantly Decline

Puppies start to require fewer calories when they are between 12 and 14 months old. When not pregnant or breastfeeding, our adult females consume two to two and a half cups each day. About three to three and a half glasses are consumed daily by our men. If they are fed less expensive food and are active, some males may require four cups. Be sure to account for the quantity of additional calories that are provided as snacks.

Keep An Eye On Your Dog’s Weight

Approximately once a month, gently feel a dog’s ribs to track their weight throughout their whole lives. Even if the dog is wet, you should be able to feel their ribs but not see them. Give them more food if you can see the ribs. If you are unable to feel them, reduce the amount of food. Your dog will require extra food if they are exercising a lot. I frequently advise people that, particularly when feeding pups, it is preferable to underfeed rather than overfeed.

Weight Range Charts

The weight growth charts for pups are shown below. Remember that very few puppies need to be at the top of these categories, and even if your dog is in this weight range, she is overweight if you cannot feel her ribs. You are overfeeding your dog if she is over these weight ranges while she is still a puppy. He or she is developing too quickly if they are outside of these ranges, even if you can feel their ribs.

Remember that only a small percentage of Golden Retriever females should weigh more than 65 pounds. No one should ever weigh more than seventy pounds. In order to accommodate Golden Retrievers’ short field lines, they have extremely wide ranges. When at a healthy weight, females of either American Goldens or imported Golden lines often weigh between 55 and 60 pounds.

Remember that only a small percentage of male golden retrievers should weigh more than 75 pounds. No one should ever weigh more than eighty-five pounds. The heavier end of these weight ranges shouldn’t be occupied by many dogs. Only a small percentage of male golden retrievers reach a healthy weight of 85 pounds. Few women weigh 70 pounds or more and maintain a healthy weight.

Amount of Food

Here are some recommendations for feeding amounts. Our mature female Golden Retrievers typically consume two cups of our preferred dry dog food, TLC, every day. On average, our adult lads will consume three and a half cups each day. During times of intense activity, some of our bigger lads have consumed nearly four or even five cups per day. Additionally, we’ve had little girls who ate just approximately 1 1/2 cups a day due to their relative sedation. The dog’s calorie requirements significantly drop, possibly by half, especially while we are traveling and he is not active as much.

These figures are based on dogs having unrestricted daily access to play and run on nearly ten acres of grassland. Many of our dogs also participate in daily agility competitions. Your dog doesn’t require as much food if they merely go for a leisurely walk once or twice a day. The majority of American dogs are overweight and overfed, and I can’t emphasize this enough.
